In 2015, Safe Harbors of the Hudson purchased a vacant lot, in the center of downtown Newburgh, NY. They commissioned One Nature as prime consultant to design/build a park that would provide space for both private and community events, as well as personal reflection. The project was permitted, designed, and built by One Nature in less than 10 months. It was also completed under budget in September 2016. A grand new entrance onto the site welcomes the community to venture through a lush, wild, and native landscape and into a variety of spaces of different scales flexible enough to host hundreds, or a small gathering, or just one. A lawn “stage” located adjacent to Ann Street provides a space for events, farmers’ markets, and informal gatherings. An open space above the stage allows for larger audiences, picnics, and informal enjoyment of the park. Rainwater is captured, cleaned and infiltrated into the ground through a series of artful bioswales designed to manage all but the most severe storms. These functional pieces of the park have become focal points – with waterfalls constructed of local, locally sourced rock, and flowering native plants. Hudson Land Design was the engineering subconsultant responsible for design of the stormwater management system.
